Technological/Computer Dictionary

Complete glossary of technological and computer terms organized alphabetically, from A to Z, explaining key concepts from the world of technology.

Hello world, my name is Francisco, fcoterroba on the Internet and today I’m bringing you a post where I’m going to explain the two most famous words (in my opinion) for each letter of the alphabet, in the technological and computer field.

I’m making this compilation to bring technology and computing, terms that go hand in hand, to any audience.

I believe that technology should be something that brings us all together without discriminating against anyone. That’s why, today I want to share my knowledge with all of you.

A

  • Abandonware → This term (combination of abandoned and software) is applied to those programs or video games that are discontinued and also do not apply copyright.
  • AVI → (Audio Video Interleave) is a video format developed by Microsoft in 1992. It allows including multiple audio streams. This means that the same movie in this format could have the video in two different languages.

B

  • Binary → Binary, or the binary system, is a numbering system used mainly in computing and electronics which only contains two digits, 0 and 1.
  • Byte → It is the basic unit of information. A byte is the composition of 8 bits and its multiples can be applied. It is represented with a capital B. It is usually used to talk about memory sizes.

C

  • cco → Usually seen in email managers and allows adding multiple recipients who will not see who else the email has been sent to.
  • Cookie → It is a small text file hosted on websites to collect user information as well as improve the experience and more.

D

  • DHCP → (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol) is a protocol by which the router or server assigns an IP address automatically without having to configure anything else.
  • DNS → (Domain Name System) It is a hierarchical naming system. It serves to translate the IP addresses of servers into domain names.

E

  • Assembler → Low-level programming language close to machine code, the code by which a computer really understands us.
  • I/O → Acronym to indicate Input/Output devices. They are devices that either input data or output it. An example of these would be the keyboard, to insert data or a screen, to output that data.

F

  • FAQ → (Frequently Asked Questions) It is usually a compilation of answered questions that are frequently asked.
  • Freeware → It is a term applied to those programs that are distributed free of charge with certain copyrights.

G

  • Gateway → (Gateway) It is a term applied in networks to indicate where our internal network connection comes from. This is always the router’s IP address.
  • Gigabyte → Represents the amount of 1024 megabytes.

H

  • Hardware → It is the set of physical and tangible elements that make up a computer system (keyboard, RAM memory, etc.)
  • Hosting → It is the service that provides web developers with a system to store information via the web.

I

  • AI → (Artificial Intelligence) are the acronyms reserved for computational sciences that attempt to develop an intelligent machine that can perceive its environment and carry out actions.
  • IDE → (Integrated Development Environment) It is a program that provides services to a programmer in a certain programming language

J

  • Java → Object-oriented programming language based on C++ fully portable since it runs on a kind of virtual machine.
  • JPG → (Join Picture Group) is a file extension that refers to images. It is a compressed format

K

  • Kernel → Refers to the core of an operating system, it is what is not seen to the inexperienced human eye.
  • Kilobyte → Multiple of byte that symbolizes 1024 bytes. Its symbol is KB)

L

  • Programming language → Writing system focused on the development of new programs.
  • Linux → It is one of the most used kernels in servers today. It is seen in all Linux distributions.

M

  • Megabyte → It is another multiple of the byte, which symbolizes 1024 KB. Its abbreviation is written MB.
  • Motherboard → English translation of the motherboard, main component in any computer.

N

  • NAS → (Network Attached Storage) is the name given to storage technology that shares the storage capacity of a computer or device with the network.
  • Netmask → From English, network mask, it is a combination of bits that serves to separate the network part from the host part.

O

  • Office automation → Techniques, procedures and services whose implementation is carried out in the office environment.
  • Open source → (Open source) this term is used to indicate those programs or games in which the project, as well as the programs and lines of code made for its creation, are open to the public and anyone can consult them.

P

  • Plug & Play → English expression to express that a device starts working simply by plugging it in.
  • PNG → (Portable Network Graphics) It is an extension that corresponds to an image with transparency.

Q

  • QR → Those square, white and black icons that act as link or product shorteners.
  • QWERTY → It is a keyboard layout that refers to the first 6 keys of it.

R

  • RAM → (Random Access Memory) It is a type of memory existing in computers, mobile phones, etc. That is volatile (when turned off it is erased) and serves to be able to do several processes at once or improve one especially.
  • Router → Network device that simply connects our equipment to the internet via cable, as long as we have a service provider contracted.

S

  • Server → A server is a kind of computer with large capacities reserved for use such as video games, web pages, newspaper archives, etc.
  • Software → Software is everything on the computer that is not hardware. (programs, drivers, operating systems, etc.)

T

  • Terabyte → Unit of measurement multiple of the byte that symbolizes 1024 Gigabytes. Its acronym is TB.
  • Trojan → Type of virus that pretends to be a normal program but contains malicious code especially focused on ruining the hard drive. Its name refers to the story of the Trojan horse.

U

  • Ubuntu → Linux distribution focused mainly on novices who are starting with the system. Also available for servers.
  • URL → (Universal Resources Locator) Address of a web page on the internet.

V

  • Virus → It is malicious software that aims to alter the normal functioning of some computer device.
  • VM → (Virtual Machine) It is a term applied to technology consisting of “creating” a computer within the same computer, using software.

W

  • www → (World Wide Web) It is how all domains start due to the distribution of interconnected hypertext or hypermedia documents accessible through the internet.
  • WYSWYG → (What You See Is What You Get) It is a phrase applied to those text processors, web, etc. Capable of showing how the final result will look.

X

  • XML → Language for describing Internet pages.
  • XQuery → Programming language for XML queries

Y

I started writing it on 11/05/2020 and even today I can’t think of any term with Y, so, write me your questions in the comments section 😊

Z

  • Zip → Compressed file that usually contains one or more data. It doesn’t lose any bits so the file will weigh more or less the sum of all the files it contains.
  • Socket → It is the place where the different electronic components of the motherboard are inserted.
